MCAC meetings are held at Pier 1, unless otherwise noticed, and begin at 11:30am.

  • Self-introductions by all present.
  1. Maritime Update (Andre Coleman)
  • Starting May 2019 and throughout the summer, the Port will commemorate Princess Cruises 50th Anniversary.  Princess had their first ship, the Princess Italia, sail to Alaska in June 1969.
  • With the new CARB regulations becoming effective in 2021, the Port is working to identify a secondary cruise terminal that has shore power connection capabilities.  There are 72 cruise calls scheduled in 2021 so far.  In the meantime, the California Association of Port Authorities (CAPA) has provided a counter proposal to CARB. We should receive an update in April.
  • Pier 80 had a record breaking month of moving 25,000+ units in February.  For calendar year 2018, we had close to 30,000 units.  Volume will more than double for 2019.
  • The Port continues to seek a shipyard operator at Pier 70.   A couple of RFP's are currently being evaluated and are under consideration.
  • The new tier 4 green locomotive has arrived and is now in the rail yard.

  1. Strategy Options for Piers 30-32 (Mike Martin)
  • The Port Commission directed Port staff in the February 26 commission meeting to come up with strategy options to improve Piers 30-32.
  • This stemmed from when the Port issued a Request for Interest on Historic Pier Opportunities.
  • Currently, Piers 30-32 is used for parking, lay berthing, and special events.

  1. Waterfront Plan Working Group Update (Diane Oshima)
  • The Waterfront Plan is the Master Plan which sets land use policies for all of the Port's properties.
  • One of the objectives in the Embarcadero Historic Piers RFP is to fix aprons and create more berthing space for smaller vessels.
  • Maritime mixed-use projects has allowed us to develop areas such as the Exploratorium and the James R Herman Cruise Terminal.
  • Given the condition of the facilities and the costs to keep them in tune, improve, or repair for maritime use alone poses a real challenge for the Port.
  • The future of maritime is tied to the investment and the development of the facilities by the Development Partners who bring money to the Port to rehabilitate the piers.
  • The draft form of Waterfront Plan will be out in May for review.
  • Comments will be taken into consideration through the summer of 2019.

  • Andre Coleman joined the Port of San Francisco as the new Maritime Director.  He has been in the industry for 15 years, most recently with Pacific Maritime Association.
  • BCDC will be updating the Seaport Plan by the end of this year.
  • There is concern whether the new CARB rules might affect tier II vessels in the future.
  • With the recent and new developments down at the Southern Waterfront, the area is beginning to draw more people.  The concern is that the Air District might focus on the air quality once it gets more populated.
  • Silverado/Zaccor requests the committee to support an expansion to their lease in order to build a recycling facility at Pier 96.  This will take many trucks off the road since the materials can be processed at Pier 96 and be shipped off by barge.
  • Anchor Brewing has officially joined the ILWU on March 13, 2019.
