Pier 15 Seawall Earthquake Safety Project

Pier 15 is a rehabilitated and seismically strengthened historic finger pier that is home to the popular Exploratorium science museum as well as small- and medium-sized berths that can support disaster response vessels.  The finger pier, which stretches 800 feet into the Bay, is supported on the landside by the century-old Embarcadero Seawall. Recent studies indicate high risk of earthquake instability of the Seawall which can damage the bulkhead and isolate the pier. This project seeks to improve earthquake safety and disaster response capability by reducing damage in the seawall zone through retrofits and targeted strengthening.  Future adaptation will be needed to fully strengthen the underlying mud and elevate the seawall and bulkhead for sea level rise and earthquake resilience.
