2017 Coastal Cleanup Day
California Coastal Cleanup Day is a statewide effort, held on the 3rd Saturday of September every year, to enlist Californians in cleaning litter and debris from our shorelines and waterways, including inland creeks that carry litter to the shore. Nearly 80% of the trash collected in San Francisco comes from the east side of the City. The Golden Gate Parks Conservancy is organizing events on the east side of the City. The Port and Recology support CCD events with supplies, logistics, waste management services, and volunteers.
At each identified CCD site, volunteer “Site Captains” direct the work of volunteers and coordinate with supporters like the Port and Recology. This year CCD events are being held at Port locations, including:
- Heron’s Head Park - Site Captain: SF Rec & Park – Greenagers (a youth service program run at Heron’s Head Park by a partnership between Port and Recreation and Parks Department)
- Pier 94 Wetland - Site Captain: Golden Gate Audubon Society
- Islais Creek Landing - Site Captain: Kayaks Unlimited and Schools of the Sacred Heart
- Mission Bay/Bay Front Park - Site Captain: Greenagers and Hilton Hotels
